We know that maintaining your outdoor garden can feel like a full-time job, and constantly replenishing your soil and repairing your raised beds can get expensive. By attending certain Grow to Learn workshops with the Parks Department’s Green Thumb staff, registered school gardens are eligible to request free soil, compost, mulch and lumber deliveries from Green Thumb! Lumber is delivered by piece (usually 2″x8″ boards, 12′ long). Soil is delivered in bags and will be dropped off inside of your school garden gate if there is a wide enough access point, or on a tarp on the sidewalk just outside the garden if the gate is too narrow. Gardens can also request bulk dump truck deliveries of mulch and compost.
At the end of the workshop, school gardeners can fill out request forms for the material they would like delievered. Once the form is delivered, gardeners will be contacted by Green Thumb staff the following season to schedule the delivery. Be sure to look out for workshops with an “L” or “S” noted to request materials.
